When I Met You In The Summer

Spicy Pineapple Marg Cropped6.22.16

Flags and fireworks, backyards and barbeques, sunshine and swimming pools…  it’s official, summer is here!

While you are enjoying the parades, parties and patriotism that make this time of year so awesome, we thought we’d add a spicy little margarita recipe to help you get your groove on. The essential ingredient in this crafty quaff is the (sometimes hard to find) Ancho Reyes – a spicy liquor distilled from ancho chilies. It brings the earthy flavors of warm dried chilies and a hint of cinnamon, and it packs some heat! Find it ahead of time here – http://anchoreyes.com/en/locator.html

Here is the recipe – super simple with three equal parts, just add all the ingredients over ice and gently stir. Serves one.

The Laughing Glass Pineapple Firecracker Margarita

2 ounces Laughing Glass Original Margarita

2 ounces Ancho Reyes – ancho chile liquor

2 ounces fresh pineapple juice

Garnish with pineapple wedge

If you are still sitting at your desk with only visions of sunny beaches and frosty cocktails dancing in your head – don’t worry, the glory that is a THREE DAY HOLIDAY WEEKEND is right around the corner!  So gather your crew, make this spicy cocktail, and let the fireworks begin!

Happy National Margarita Day!

We don’t want to overhype it or anything but, IS THERE ANYTHING BETTER THAN A NATIONAL HOLIDAY DEVOTED TO MARGARITAS? So maybe the boozy “holiday” isn’t exactly a time-honored tradition… One could even argue it’s an industry creation, but America doesn’t seem to have a problem with it. In fact, margaritas are the most consumed cocktail in the US. Some accounts have us drinking 200,000 margaritas per hour.

So, what are YOU doing to celebrate on 2/22/2016?

In honor of our favorite holiday, we wanted to offer up a simple and easy twist on the classic margarita. This spicy fave will bite you at first, but after a few sips, you will not be able to put it down. We hope you enjoy!

Classic Jalapeño Cucumber Marg

Ingredients:

1/4 wedge of lime

1/3 to 1/2 fresh jalapeño

6 cucumber rounds

5 oz Laughing Glass Margarita (original flavor)

Directions:

In a cocktail shaker, muddle jalapeño and 5 cucumber rounds with the juice of the lime

Add the LGC margarita, shake, and strain over ice into a cocktail glass (we recommend a salted rim)

Garnish with the remaining cucumber round, and float jalapeños cut into rounds

Have you ever taken one of those “What’s Your Love Style” quizzes?

love style cocktails edit

According to social psychology, there are 6 different types of lovers.  According to us, there are only 3 ways of reflecting that in a cocktail…  Okay, okay, maybe we could have come up with something for “Needy” or “Ball Buster,” but we decided to quit while we were ahead with “Sexy,” “Sweet” and “Spicy.”  Those 3 sounded much better tasting!

(All recipes use the Laughing Glass Pomegranate Margarita and each recipe serves 1 so, obviously, double these for Valentine’s Day!)

SEXY Basil Watermelon Margarita (middle picture)

In a cocktail shaker, add

½ cup fresh watermelon

4-5 large basil leaves

*muddle energetically*

Add 4 oz of Laughing Glass Pomegranate Margarita

Shake, strain into a sexy martini glass, and garnish with basil leaves

SWEET Mandarin Sorbet Margarita (pictured on left)

3 oz Laughing Glass Pomegranate Margarita

2 oz prosecco or champagne

1 oz fresh mandarin or tangerine juice

HERE’S THE BEST PART, use a melon baller to create 3-5 “ice cubes” of orange sherbet.  Let the sherbet melt a bit before serving – it makes a lovely sweet orange creamy topping and tastes delish.  Sweets for the sweet!

SPICY Ginger Pomegranate Margarita (pictured on right)

In a cocktail shaker, add

1 finger of peeled ginger, sliced into small bits

5 small chunks of fresh lemongrass

¼ lime

1/3 Thai red chili or jalepeno pepper

*muddle enthusiastically*

Add 5 oz Laughing Glass Pomegranate Margarita (tastes great with Original flavor too!)

Shake, strain over ice, garnish with chili or jalepeno and lemongrass stalk.

WORD TO THE WISE: Thai red chilies are my preference but they are extremely spicy, please use caution and watch those seeds!

Fancy cheese? Yes please!

Wine and cheese have been paired together forever, and believe me, there’s no one who appreciates a beautiful triple cream brie with a luxurious champagne as much as I do. I’m drooling just thinking about it! But don’t you think we can modernize just a smidge? Isn’t it time to get a little more daring with your pairings? Of course it is! And with all the opportunities to celebrate coming up, we knew it was the perfect time to enlist our buddies over at our local market to find the perfect twist – cheese pairings with the Laughing Glass original margarita.

We have categorized the cheese by country and offered a little bit about why it works.

Spain: Manchego 12 Month Raw

Why this works: A mouthwatering margarita delectably balances the salty richness of the aged, hard cheese, and plays up its sweet/nutty characteristics. Our margarita is also well known to play up the sweet/nutty characteristics of your party guests, so there you go, perfect match!

Spain: Drunken Goat

Why it works: First of all, can we talk about the name? Is this cheese a booze company’s best friend? Drunken Goat is one of those magical cheeses that can go with just about anything. Its flavor is sweet, with a goaty creaminess, which makes it pair well with a slew of alcoholic beverages. Delicious disaster-proof party fare.

Italy: Taleggio

Why this works: the creamy cheese has a thin crust and a strong aroma, but its flavor is comparatively mild. Goes nicely with the bold, earthy structure of tequila, and makes you feel like you’re on a picnic in a field of grass in the Italian countryside.

Holland: Midnight Moon Goat Gouda

Why this works: Easy-to-drink Laughing Glass contrasts beautifully with this smooth, dense cheese. There is a slight crunch of protein crystals to match the lightly carbonated margarita. Tip of the day: Try making a decadent grilled cheese appetizer with this one. Yum!

Multi-national: Any double or triple cream from Mt. Tam, Daffinois, Delice D’Argental, etc.

Why these work: “Bloomy” is how the cheese guys say it. These soft, luxurious brie-like delights match perfectly with everything, as far as I’m concerned. Can I spread brie on my life? Especially nice with the crisp, sparkle of limey margaritas.

The spicy twist! Hard, crumbly jalepeno cheddar

Why it works: Well, c’mon! Spicy, salty, jalepeno-infused sharp cheddar? The thought alone is making me want to knock back a refreshing margarita. This cheese is a surprise, a conversation starter, and just plain fun.

So think of what we’ve got on the horizon here just in February alone: Superbowl 50, Valentine’s Day, and National Margarita Day (yes, it is a thing, it is on February 22, brace yourselves). Instead of inviting friends over for traditional hors d’oeuvres (and having to race around the kitchen preparing a bunch of different choices), why not build a get-together around a few great cheeses paired with Laughing Glass Margaritas? From an entertaining standpoint: delicious, simple, brilliant.

Need me? I’ll be over here by the cheese…!
